Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology - Terre Haute
Mader Design has worked closely with Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology for various landscape studies, cost estimates, and site improvements on the campus.
In 2023, Mader Design developed a conceptual study and preliminary master plan for the university’s Blumberg, Scharpenberg, and Mees residence halls. Known as the “Triplet” dorms, the three identical buildings opened in 1967 and accommodate over 220 students. Rose-Hulman sought options to improve the connectivity and safety of the dorms’ steeply graded site conditions and deteriorating retaining walls, spanning over 20 feet of grade change between the dorms and the surrounding campus facilities. Concepts were studied to improve the dorms’ accessibility and safety, including new ramps, terraced retaining walls, and improved student gathering spaces. To reduce costs, a phasing plan was also studied to increase feasibility of further planning and construction in future efforts.
The following year, Mader Design developed detailed plans for two additional projects: landscape plantings at the campus’s main entry gateway, and new pickleball courts adjacent to the residence halls. The pickleball court design included preservation of shade trees; new fencing, surfacing, lighting, and pickleball nets; and additional site amenities. The entry landscape planting design addressed challenges such as screening utilities, preserving sight lines of security equipment, selecting plant species with year-round interest, and paying homage to iconic campus landmarks. These campus improvements completed installation in 2025. Additional projects at Rose-Hulman are currently being studied for implementation in future years.
